Apex Scotland

Apex Scotland is a national organisation that helps offenders, ex-offenders and young people at risk of offending to take the steps that will move them closer towards getting a job, training for work, or enrolling in a course at college. Locally, Apex has partnerships with organisations who work with people who have previous or stabilised substance misuse issues. We offer literacies based learning both on a one-to-one and group work basis. In addition to this, we encourage outdoor learning and conservation activities to increase motivation, improve wellbeing and to learn how to work as part of a team.

Calman Trust

Calman provides training and support to young people under 25, experiencing difficulty in the transition into further education, training or employment and/or sustaining independent living, who need a plan for the future. Our aim is to enable young people to achieve a sustained progression into independent living, holding down a job or participating in their community.

By combining training and housing support, young people can learn the skills for work whilst receiving support to deal with changes in their circumstances, which greatly improves their chances of sustaining progress. We operate social enterprise businesses in Inverness and Invergordon where young people train in employability skills that are directly transferable to any job. All these businesses are accredited SQA learning centres, so that, in addition to working within a real business environment and building a track record as evidence to future employers, young people can achieve a nationally recognised qualification. Much of our learning is gained through experience in real business and includes the delivery of workplace Core Skills. The opportunities available extend from part-time attendance through Activity Agreements to employed status undertaking Modern Apprenticeship.

Young people can become involved in our learning activities while they are still in school, in preparation for moving on into the workplace or college with a better chance of sustaining their place. Housing support is normally available for young people from the age of 16. Young people can sign up for training or housing support or a combination of these so it is not necessary for a young person to be experiencing difficulties with their living circumstances to take part in training. If a young person has left school and is not working or at college, we may be able to help and there is a possibility of obtaining a training allowance for taking part.
